Zoe Gardner-Lawson, a 36-year-old mother of three, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer after being misdiagnosed with a urinary tract infection. Her story highlights the importance of being aware of overlooked symptoms and advocating for one’s health.
Zoe’s ordeal began in August 2024, when she suddenly experienced lower back pain. Her doctor prescribed antibiotics over the phone, but the pain persisted, and she was bedridden by the time she finished her third dose. Despite her deteriorating condition, Zoe was still without answers.
It wasn’t until she visited the emergency room in September that Zoe finally received some attention. However, even then, her symptoms were misdiagnosed as kidney stones. It wasn’t until she demanded a full-body CT scan that the true extent of her condition was revealed.
The scan showed a lime-sized tumor on her colon, which had perforated and spread to her liver, peritoneum, and stomach lymph nodes. Zoe was told that she may have been living with the tumor for up to four years.
Zoe underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor and has since undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy. Her prognosis remains uncertain, and she faces a long and challenging road to recovery.
Despite the neglect she experienced, Zoe is using her platform to raise awareness about colon cancer and advocate for earlier screening. She believes that if her illness had been detected earlier, it would have been much easier to treat.
