David Wallace had always known that taking in little Sam as a child was the best thing he had ever done. David had been Sam’s rock over the years, there for him through all of his childhood. Sam did start to wonder about his past and his real parents as he got older, though. David tried his best to answer, but there was one thing he couldn’t say: why did Sam’s real mother give him up for adoption?
David got a call one day from a lawyer working for Sam’s birth mother. The lawyer told Sam that his birth mother was very sick and wanted to meet him before she died. David wasn’t sure at first, but something the lawyer said made him change his mind. His promise to meet Sam’s birth mother came true, and a few days later, they were stood outside of a hospice care centre.
Sam’s birth mother was in bed with tears in her eyes when they walked in. When Sam came up to her, she gave him a weak smile, and David could see love in her eyes. Sam looked at David for comfort because he could tell how people were feeling in the room. David got down on one knee next to him and looked into the eyes of Sam’s birth mother. He told her that this was the woman who had given birth to him.
The room was very quiet as Sam thought about what he had just learnt. He then turned to his birth mother and asked, “Is it true?” “You loved me?” David responded, “Yes, Sam,” with tears in his eyes. Being a mother is hard, but she did it to give you a better life because she loved you so much.
David learnt that love can look like many things as they spent more time together. Sometimes you have to let go and sometimes you have to hold on. During that moment, he knew that Sam had always been loved, by both his real mother and the man who raised him.
David knew that Sam had found a truth about his past that would help him grow as they left the hospice that day. That’s why David was so thankful for the woman who gave birth to his son and the love that linked them all.
