Have you ever been stuck behind someone in the fast lane whose cart was too full? Recently, I had an experience at a Colorado Springs Walmart where the checker had a great answer that made an awkward situation fun to watch.
A woman with a cart full of food pushed her way to the front of the 10-item line while the customer was still in line with only a few items. The cashier asked the woman nicely to pick out the ten things she wanted to buy, since there was a clear sign in the fast lane that said that was how many items she could bring.
The woman wasn’t sure what the cashier meant when she asked her to buy everything in her cart. The cashier gently told the customer about the store’s rules and even put up her hands to show that they could only have ten items. The woman got more and more angry until she stormed out of the store, pointing her finger at the cashier and other customers.
The customer who saw the transaction was so impressed with how quickly and professionally the cashier handled it that they gave her a $20 tip as a thank you. This experience reminds us that wit and humour can sometimes go a long way towards making things less tense.
