I never thought I’d have a child of my own, let alone someone else’s. But things didn’t go as planned. Molly and I became good friends when we were in college. Before she got pregnant, she was pretty, healthy, and easygoing.
Tanner, the child’s father, broke up with Molly quickly when he refused to take care of the kid. I was shocked and hurt when he turned me down. She didn’t know what to do and felt torn. That’s when I did something that changed my whole life: I asked her to marry me and offered to help raise the baby.
We got married in private, and I was there for Molly while she was pregnant. I fell deeply in love with Amelia when she was born. Even though Molly was having a hard time getting used to being a mom, I became the dad she needed.
Molly’s anger grew as time went on. She missed the easy life she used to have, and she finally broke. She packed her bags one night and left us. Even though it broke my heart, I knew I had to be strong for Amelia.
The years that followed were hard, but I promised myself I would be the best dad I could be. Amelia and I put our lives back together, and I made sure she knew I loved and cared for her. On the other hand, Molly seemed to be doing great. Her social media was full of pictures of parties and freedom.
Years later, Molly came back and demanded that she have custody of Amelia. She said Tanner was ready to meet his daughter and that Amelia should be with her “real family.” Even though I was mad and hurt, I knew I had to protect Amelia.
When I saw Amelia, I knew I had made the right choice all those years ago. She turned into my father, and I turned into her everything. Our link could not be broken, and I was thankful for the path that had led us to this point.
