Taking apart the strands of love and marriage

It was meant to be a happy event when we brought our adopted son Sam home, but it showed how weak my marriage was. When I think back, I see that some events that change your life come with hurdles you didn’t expect.

As we drove to the adoption agency, I felt tense all the way there. I played around with Sam’s tiny blue jumper, picturing how his small shoulders would make it fit better.

“Are you anxious?” I asked Mark, my husband.

He answered without much thought, but the way he held the driving wheel showed that he wasn’t feeling very calm. His tense tapping on the dashboard was a clear sign that he was getting more and more uneasy.

I took care of most of the paperwork, home studies, and interviews during the long adoption process while Mark worked on his business.

At first, we really wanted to adopt a baby, but the waiting lines seemed to go on forever. So, I looked at more pictures and found Sam’s. He is three years old and has beautiful eyes and a huge smile.

Everything changed at that time.

We were happy to have Sam in our lives, but Mark was starting to worry. When Mark bathed Sam for the first time, that was the first sign of trouble.

“We can’t keep him!” Mark yelled, and his voice was filled with fear.

Remembering that day has helped me understand that adoption is more than just getting a new child. It’s also about facing your own fears, weaknesses, and limits.

Our story is a testament to how complicated love, marriage, and family can be. It’s full of happiness, sadness, and strength.
