A woman asked on Facebook about a strange “crust” on her bed, but no one answered. But in Winchester, Hampshire, a similar find revealed a shocking truth.
It took months for the 3ft wide and 1.5ft deep nest to form because the bugs chewed through the cushion and pillows to make their complex home.
The homeowner, who lived alone in the five-bedroom house, had been sharing her space with the wasps for months without realising it. The bugs got into the spare bedroom through a window that was left open, turning it into a busy colony.
Birkett put on safety gear and used a special spray to carefully get rid of the wasps. Even though it was hard, he was able to get a favourite blanket off the bed.
Even though the wasps were able to get rid of the threat, Birkett couldn’t help but respect their amazing engineering.
This unexpected meeting shows how important it is to regularly check our living places so we don’t end up sharing our homes with people we don’t want to live with.
